The Digital Switchover - helping residents prepare

The UK's telephone network is being upgraded as part of the national Digital Switchover, with traditional analogue landlines due to move to digital services by 31 January 2027.

For most residents, the change should be straightforward. However, anyone with equipment connected to their landline – such as telecare alarms, fall detectors or healthcare monitoring devices – should read and respond to communications from their telephone provider to make sure their services continue to work correctly. You can help by raising awareness within their communities, particularly among vulnerable residents, and encouraging people to engage with their provider about the switchover.

Residents should also be alert to potential scams linked to the switchover. Anyone receiving an unexpected call, text, email or doorstep visit should avoid sharing personal or financial information and, if in doubt, contact their telephone provider directly using a trusted contact number.

The council is working with major telecommunications providers to identify vulnerable customers known to us who have not yet engaged with the process, so further support can be offered where needed. Individual enquiries about landline services or migration arrangements should be directed to the resident's telecommunications provider.
