Welcome to Duddon Parish Council

The Organisation

Duddon Parish is situated in South West Cumbria, mainly within the Lake District National Park, and was formed in 1976 to incorporate the old parishes of Broughton West, Seathwaite with Dunnerdale and Angerton.

The Parish

The Parish stretches from the summit of Wrynose Pass in the North to the Duddon Estuary on Morecambe Bay in the South.

Broughton-in-Furness
The main town within the parish is the small ancient market town of Broughton-in-Furness, which has a Charter dating back to 1575. 

The Valleys
Contained within the wide boundaries of the parish are the Duddon Valley, much beloved by Wordsworth, the secluded Lickle Valley, the beautiful Woodland Valley and the marshes of Angerton on the Duddon Estuary.

The Communities
The main hamlets in these valleys comprise Woodland, Broughton Mills, Ulpha, Dunnerdale, Seathwaite, Cockley Beck & Angerton.

Urgent Road Closure - Church Street

An urgent road closure has been put in place to allow Westmorland and Furness Highways to carry out urgent highway repair works.

This notice will be in force for a period not exceeding 5 days from 3rd May 2024. It is expected that the Works will take 1 day.

Location: Church Street, Broughton-In-Furness, from its junction with Griffin Street, extending in a north westerly direction to its junction with the A593.

Alternative Route: A suitable alternative route will be signed and made available via the A593, C5009, New Street, Market Street and Station Road.

N.B. Due to the nature of the works it is not possible to maintain access for pedestrian and dismounted cyclist through the site.

Access for Emergency Vehicles will not be maintained for the duration of these works.

A temporaryvtraffic regulation order has been put in place to facilitate the holding of the Fred Whitton Cycle Sportive which will take place on the 12th May 2024.

Location:

(i) U5032 Wrynose Pass, from its junction with the U4059 to its junction with the U5527, a distance of approx. 5.2km (Ref: TTROW/9805); and

(i) U5527 near Blea Tarn, from its junction with the U5032, extending in an overall north westerly direction for approx. 2.4km (Ref: TTROW/9805).

A way for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained at all times. A suitable alternative route for motor vehicles will be signed and available via the unrestricted section of the U4059, C4026, C4028 (through Ulpha), C5007 (Broughton Mills), A595, A593 (Skelwith Bridge), B5343 and the unrestricted section of the U5527.

Please note: Restrictions have also been introduced by Cumberland Council to facilitate the closure of the remaining length within their Authority Area.

Access for Emergency Vehicles will be maintained where required for the duration of the restriction
